Abstract Text:
Ovarian dysfunction can cause fertility problems and major production loss in ruminant species, including ewesand dairy cattle. Understanding epigenetic mechanisms that regulate expression of genes can help us better address these problems. Therefore, the goal of our research is to understand cell- and follicular stage-specific epigenetic mechanism in the ovary, using laboratory rats as model, with the long term goal of applying this information to economically important ruminant species. Although the role of epigenetic mechanisms in controlling cell-specific gene expression is well appreciated in other organs, current understanding of epigenetic mechanisms that control gene expression during ovarian folliculogenesis is very limited. From the persepective of epigenetic mechanisms, the ovary is a highly heterogeneous organ. Not only do different cell types can have different epigenetic profiles, but also a cell type can have different epigenetic profiles, depending on the follicle stage it is associated with. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct epigenetic analyses in the ovary in a cell- and follicular stage-specific manner to fully identify the role of epigenetic mechanisms in gene expression.
