Description

Abstract Text:
In an effort to create more habitat for birds that rely on shrubby gaps within the New Jersey highlands, I will evaluate active management options (such as timber harvest) in terms of their ability to create quality habitat for this imperiled group. I will produce maps of existing shrub habitat based on the presence of a select group of six birds that are dependent on these habitats for their life history needs. These maps can be used to locate existing tracts of land that are valuable for conservation. These maps will also provide a baseline estimate of the extent and location of shrub habitat. I will also explicitly consider the trade-offs associated with converting existing relatively mature forest into shrub habitats in terms of the overall benefit to bird biodiversity. This effort will produce an additional map that represents an optimal model for management across the landscape such that the needs of birds that require shrub and of those that require mature forest are adequately met.

It is important to recognize, and consider in any interpretation of Federal RePORTER data, that the publication and patent information cannot be associated with any particular year of a research project. The lag between research being conducted and the availability of its results in a publication or patent award varies substantially. For that reason, it's difficult, if not impossible, to associate a publication or patent with any specific year of the project. Likewise, it is not possible to associate a publication or patent with any particular supplement to a research project or a particular subproject of a multi-project grant.
